What does the County Clerk Do?

The office of County Clerk is a very complex job. In some ways, the clerk’s office is the hub of the county. The functions of the office are mandated by state and federal law. I work with all the departments in the county to ensure we comply with the laws.

As the Clerk of the District Court. I oversee the deputy clerks. I oversee the court budgets. I have implemented digitizing our court records.

As the Recorder, the clerk maintains all the land records for the county. I have worked hard to get our records digitized for safety and as an additional backup. I have also been teaching other counties do the same thing.

As the budget officer for the county, I present to and assist the commissioners in putting together the complex $39 million budget. This process takes about six months. In the time I have been clerk, I have helped keep the county in sound financial condition.

As the election official for the county, I oversee all elections from federal, state, county, cities, schools, fire districts, cemetery districts, hospital districts, library districts, soil conservation, and mosquito abatement districts.

As the social services department (welfare), my office processes the applications and presents them to the commissioners.

As the auditor for the county, my office takes care of the accounts payable and receivable for the county. I am responsible for the payroll. I work very closely with the commissioners, our insurance agents, and our outside auditors.

As the human resource officer, I assist all departments with their HR needs. I have been very involved in establishing a step and grade wage system, and have worked hard on keeping our personnel policy up to date with the changes that occur in federal and state law.

As the risk manager for the county, I oversee all tort claims for the county and work closely with our insurance agents and attorneys.

As the clerk to the board of county commissioners, I advertise all their meetings and hearings, keep the minutes for their meetings, and work very closely with them to keep their records current.

I couldn’t do all these duties without an excellent, professional staff. I appreciate the work they do for the citizens of the county.
